The Winter Derby is a Group 3 Flat race open to horses aged four years or older. It is run over a distance of 1 mile 3 furlongs in March. The winter’s most prestigious Flat race is the biggest ever to be staged at the Nottinghamshire track, which was upgraded to a Tapeta surface in 2021 and is widely considered one of the best of its kind in the world.
The event was established in 1998 at Lingfield Park and the inaugural edition was won by Running Stag. It was given Listed status in 1999, and promoted to Group 3 level in 2006. The original race distance was 1 mile 2 furlongs.
The Winter Derby has been the jewel in the crown of All-Weather racing since Running Stag won the inaugural race in 1998 for Philip Mitchell, father of top jockey Jack Mitchell. Since then the names of top horses like Tranquil Tiger, Grendisar and Alenquer have had their names etched on the trophy.
John Gosden is the most successful trainer in its history. He’s won the race four times in the last five years with Wissahickon, Dubai Warrior, Forest Of Dean and, of course, Lord North.
Military Order won the 2024 BetUK Winter Derby at Southwell, beating race favourite Lord North by a length. Trained by Charlie Appleby and ridden by Danny Tudhope, Military Order capitalized on recent form to claim victory in the 1-mile 3-furlong contest, with Tyrrhenian Sea finishing third.
